How to check the address
Open Guildford Borough Council’s planning-restrictions search, enter the property address, select My Guildford and then use My Maps. Under Planning, enable conservation areas and Tree Preservation Orders.
- Search the exact property address
- Inspect both conservation-area and TPO layers
- Check planning history for tree-related conditions
- Contact the council if the tree or boundary is unclear
If the tree has a TPO
TPO work normally requires a formal application and written consent unless a specific exception applies. The description should identify the tree and proposed operation precisely enough for the authority to assess it.
- Tree number or location plan
- Species and measurements where available
- Clear pruning or removal specification
- Reasons and supporting professional evidence
If the property is in a conservation area
A tree without its own TPO may still be protected by conservation-area provisions. A section 211 notice normally gives the council six weeks to consider whether to make an order. A tree already covered by a TPO follows the TPO process instead.
- Do not submit a vague notice
- Keep the acknowledgement and submission date
- Do not start simply because a contractor is available
- Complete work within the allowed scope and period
Dead or immediately dangerous trees
Dead-tree and immediate-risk exceptions are specific. Where work cannot wait because there is a present serious safety risk, limit it to what is necessary, keep evidence and notify the authority as required. Wildlife protection continues to apply.
- Photograph the condition without entering danger
- Record the competent assessment
- Tell the council as soon as practicable
- Plan remaining non-urgent work separately
